Mosca presents virtual showcase in place of Interpack appearance

Mosca are bringing their planned Interpack presentation into the digital world with a virtual exhibition stand. This web portal can be accessed via www.mosca.com without prior registration from 25 February 2021. With a few mouse clicks, visitors can move through six thematic spaces and experience detailed views of various high-performance machines. The highlight of the virtual presentation is a fully automated application for flexible strapping of stacked pallets with different heights. This system is based on the KZV-321 pallet strapping machine, the EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6 H horizontal strapping machine as well as automated guided vehicles from partner company Gebhardt Fördertechnik GmbH.

Interpack is one of the most important trade fairs on our event calendar and we very much regret that we will not be able to meet customers, journalists and other interested visitors in person next year. We are therefore all the more pleased that with the digital trade fair stand Mosca have created a varied portal that enables visitors to experience Mosca technologies and solutions on a virtual level.

The virtual exhibition stand is complemented by a multimedia information service. In addition to user videos and interviews, visitors can download brochures. Contact details for the right experts with knowledge about the specific topics and machines are also just a mouse click away.

New MS-6 KR-ZV leads Mosca portfolio at FachPack 2018

EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6 KR-ZV enables pallet strapping without safety enclosure

EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-H is in top form for fast-strapping bulky items

The UCB specializes in non-standardized products such as four-point or six-point folding cartons

Waldbrunn, 12. July 2018 – Mosca is showcasing a full range of strapping solutions for a variety of applications at FachPack 2018. Celebrating its premiere at Stand 513 in Hall 4A, the compact EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6 KR-ZV is designed for maximum efficiency and high performance – especially for strapping pallets with reduced strap tension. The machine’s “big sister,” the KZV-111, is ideal for preparing shipments containing bulky and heavy goods on pallets. The EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-H shows how strapping technology can be integrated into Industry 4.0 set-ups. A network connection ensures that the machine can be checked and controlled at any time from any location.

The new EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6 KR-ZV will be presented for the first time at FachPack 2018. The machine is specially designed for products with feet such as dollies, wire mesh containers or pallets requiring lower strap tension of max. 450 N. Due to the lower strap tension and force-limited traversing units, the machine, which is supplied CE-compliant from the factory, does not require a safety enclosure. This significantly lowers the purchase price. The operator is not required to leave the safety zone during machine operation and can feed packages faster. The EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6 KR-ZV comes equipped with the patented Mosca SoniXs ultrasonic sealing unit that is positioned to the side of the product to be strapped. This ensures protection against contamination by falling particles or dripping liquids. It also allows a lower conveyor height enabling the machine to strap pallets on the ground. The movable sealing unit has a stroke of up to 340mm.

The “big sister” to the EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6 KR-ZV, the KZV-111 is ideal for vertical strapping of bulky pallets. It also has a movable tongue that slides under the product. The sealing unit is positioned above the package on a sliding plate, which makes it easy to handle packages higher than 350mm. The KZV-111 can be integrated into existing production lines and guarantees seamless package processing.

High speed for bulky goods

The EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-H is the non-plus-ultra solution when it comes to fast horizontal strapping of bulky items like furniture or white goods. The machine triple straps up to 180 packages per hour, making it ideal for handling high-volume production runs. Heavy goods are best strapped horizontally, which is why the MS-6-H features a side sealing unit with a vertically sliding frame capable of safely strapping packages at up to ten different heights. The machine can be optionally equipped with a horizontal sealing unit to strap packages that are not optimally aligned. Setting the strapping position is easy: Either the operator selects a suitable program via touch panel or the EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-H uses sensors to determine product height and completes the strapping operation according to user-defined parameters.

Network solutions for Industry 4.0

Mosca engineered the fully automatic EVOLUTION SoniXs TR-6 Pro for integration into existing packaging lines. The high-performance machine straps up to 45 packages per minute and is best suited for tightly-scheduled logistics operations. The optional double strap dispenser reduces set-up time by automatically switching from an empty roll to a spare coil during operation. The EVOLUTION SoniXs TR-6 Pro bridges the gap between high-performance strapping technology and Industry 4.0 with a network interface that enables the user to check and regulate machine operation as needed at any time from any location.

The networking options are not limited to the machine itself. The model on display at FachPack 2018 features a strap coil with RFID tags. This enables the coil to transfer information to a company’s enterprise resource planning system, determine stock levels, and autonomously place reorders. At the same time, employees can track automated processes via the ERP system.

No problem with complex products

The Mosca UCB is also network capable. The cross-strapping machine with aligning station offers corrugated board manufacturers plenty of flexibility. The UCB is ideal for non-standardized products which, unlike fully automated strapping machines, are fed manually. The standard four-sided product transport handles complex products, like four-point or six-point folding cartons. Manual operation is supported by automatic cycle rate adjustment (CRA), which adapts the machine speed to the operator’s pace and thus protects machine components. The UCB is CE-compliant from the factory, which means that the user doesn’t need an additional safety enclosure. The UCB is also optimally equipped for efficiency and performance. Standard features include a double strap dispenser and SoniXs ultrasonic sealing unit.

Proven machine quality, even for entry-level models

High-end technology is also available to customers interested in entry-level machines. The RO-M Fusion features a heat welding system with electronic temperature control and a coil change and threading system optimized for user-friendly operation. Thanks to the modular Mosca design, customers can choose from different frame sizes adapted to the size of their products. Dual foot switches and a flexible control panel ensure ergonomic operation.

The Mosca machine portfolio on display at FachPack 2018 is complemented by the company’s ONE Service global service network along with information on strapping materials and ordering options.

Carrots!
Playing fair with the market!

  carrot-illustration_lr2

Have you ever wondered why it is important to grade fruit and vegetables as accurately as possible?

Well here are a few reasons:

  1. Losses as a result of substandard products included in your shipment reaching the market and causing the whole shipment to be downgraded.
  2. Accurate grading ensures the consumer gets good value for the price they pay for produce.
  3. Grading prevents defective produce from damaging healthy produce.
  4. Grading/ sizing correctly makes for easier packing and neater packs.
  5. Grading allows the market to be fair to both consumers and producers.
  6. Effective grading builds trust between consumers and producers.
So if you are a carrot producer, how can you grade effectively so that you and the consumer can get the best value out of your crop?

MECHANICAL GRADING BY SIZE:

  1. Diameter:  This system uses rollers to grade by diameter. This method on its own works very well only if the carrots going to market are not going to be bagged or to a retail outlet that does not demand length conformity.
  2. Length: Length graders offer grading in various different lengths. This is very important if the carrots are going to be bagged by uniform length with an automatic or semi–automatic bagger.
  3. The Ideal Combination: Many pack houses use a combination of both roller and length graders i.e. they grade by length and then diameter and then bag for the market.
  4. Quality Grading: This is generally carried out visually/ manually but is not accurate due to fatigue of the person/s carrying out the task.

All of the above methods only grade by size and require a manual line to remove defective produce.

ADVANCED GRADING:

Fully Automatic Optical Grading: For those producers that require advanced grading for their carrots, Newtec have created the Celox C-UHD. This cleverly designed vegetable powerhouse, sorts carrots by length, diameter, volume, shape and quality. The software of the intelligent camera has a capacity of approximately 50 billion calculations per second and ensures a complete surface assessment of the carrots.

Advanced graders such as the Newtec Celox XTP (view video) can grade up to 15 tons per hour into 6 sizes.

Crop Grading!

 Advanced vs simple

You get to choose!

potato_crop

Grading your crop is not an option. In fact it’s an essential step in post harvest management. Grading directly affects the market value of the product. But grading is not a simple subject because it requires the producer to decide which criteria are going to be used and how the grading is going to be done.

In general, the more sophisticated the grading, the higher the market price that the produce can command. Essentially every producer has to ask and answer the question. How will my grading system affect my product conformance to market grades and standards and the final price of my crop?

So lets take a look at the grading issue and the options that are available to producers.

Grading basically falls into two camps: Simple and Advanced.

SIMPLE GRADING:

This involves grading by only two categories, size and visual quality. A belt or roller grader does the size grading while a manual line, quality grades. This system has advantages and disadvantages.

The advantages of simple grading are just that. It’s simple and belt and roller graders are less expensive than advanced graders. It also provides employment to farming communities.

The disadvantage is that while the size grading is reasonably accurate the quality and speed of visual grading relies on the human eye and is often subject to the effects of fatigue, boredom, lack of motivation and labour issues.

Belt and roller graders

Belt and roller graders use various combinations of belts or rollers to size vegetables such as potatoes, onions, beetroot and carrots. Machines can be supplied by Goldpack and are manufactured by world-class companies such as Haith and Emve.

Belt and roller graders offer a wide range of complexity and can be adjusted to accommodate multiple sizes (and in the case of carrots, length and diameter) and product flows. In the case of carrots one would use a length grader to grade for length and diameter, to grade for diameter.

Roller graders work on the principle of larger and larger spaces between the rollers as the crop progresses down the line. That allows one machine to process the crops in a single pass and permits a wide variation of sizing. These can also be supplied with outflow feeders so that various sizes are streamed off immediately.

Belt graders use an endless belt or belts, but unlike roller graders do not offer such a wide range of sizing.

Neither machine offers grading by quality. On the contrary, defective produce must be removed via manual line before or after size grading.

Advanced grading:

Involves grading optically using multiple cameras, which gather information and sort produce according to preselected criteria. These machines offer an efficiency and accuracy that is unmatched by simple graders.

The advantages of the system are speed, accuracy, wide grading options and total consistency. Fatigue, boredom and labour issues become a thing of the past, as the system is totally automatic. However, optical graders (view video) are more expensive than belt or roller graders and while they tend to reduce labour costs they also reduce employment opportunities.

Advanced graders such as the Newtec Celox XTP (view video) grade according to length, diameter and volume and can grade up to 15 tons per hour into 6 sizes. The system also grades according to quality using a camera that photographs each crop 40 times and can spot and remove a wide range of surface damage and discolouration.

How to choose a Packhouse bagging and sealing system that’s right for you?

GOLDPACK ANSWERS
5 KEY QUESTIONS:

By the time fresh produce reaches the packhouse, most farmers feel that the hard work has been done. But now comes a make or break decision. Packaging! The importance of superb packaging can’t be underestimated. Your bag is going to engage directly with the consumer. The right system should maximizes on-shelf presence, price and consumer satisfaction.

So how do you make a smart choice? Let’s consider the next 5 questions.

GIL_7000EA_BAGS

QUESTION 1

What’s in the bag? Every type of produce demands different packaging. Understanding how the contents of the bag can and will affect the packaging can go a long way in determining the packaging process required, the bag style, bag material needed and the most appropriate choice in packaging equipment. For example packing and bagging unprocessed raw carrots is a very different process from preparing punnets of cherry tomatoes for market or bagging peppers.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

QUESTION 2

Which bag? Choosing the correct bag type and bag material is the logical next step. Standard bag materials generally include low or hi-density polyethylene, polypropylene, net bags, combinations of net and film or paper foil and plastic. Bag styles include wicketed bags, pillow bags, net bags and bags on a roll of film especially designed for form fill seal machines. In some cases, the customer may stipulate bag type, in other cases the choice will be left to the producer.

Ready-to-eat items require specialised packaging processes and bag material. These products are easily packaged using continuous roll film material (often polypropylene, poly- ester or foil laminates) on a purpose-built conveyorized machine. The bag material is automatically formed into shape, the product is inserted and the package is sealed on three sides and trimmed. The variety of bag, bag size and material combinations is nearly as numerous as the types of products to be packaged. So choosing bag type will need to be done in consultation with a reputable service provider.

jasa_potato_pkt

QUESTION 3

Which process? Well this depends on the product and it’s potential shelf life and durability. Some goods such as deciduous fruits need gentle handling from cradle to grave. Produce such as lettuce and salad greens will require rapid form fill sealing and possibly MAP technology. Potatoes are a little more robust and will happily head to market in a 7 kg paper bag. Systems have to be designed according to produce packed, required time to market and the retail landscape in the supermarket.

 JASA_easy_bagger

QUESTION 4

How fast do you plan to pack? Operating speed will have a great bearing on your choice and the cost of system. Today, highly automated packaging systems are readily available and operate at incredible speeds. But not everybody needs this high level of manufacturing capacity. In fact, many packaging systems are neither used every single day nor at maximum capacity – so choosing a machine that closely matches your operational production level is an  important consideration. Many semi-automatic systems offer acceptable speeds and performance at lower costs.

2004XXB

QUESTION 5

How do I choose the right supplier? Here are some important points for consideration.

Has the supplier been in the business for a long time? Reputable suppliers will have been in business a long time, will have a proven track record and don’t need to hurry you into a decision. Reputable suppliers will make every effort to understand your needs, before recommending a system. Remember equipment suppliers are rarely bag manufacturers so there is a need for them to work in tandem, so that the system can operate with the chosen bag.

Does the supplier have a large installed base? Good suppliers have a wealth of happy customers a solid client base.

Are current customers happy with their equipment? This is very important to check. A few well-placed phone calls to some existing clients could save you major pain later. Don’t be frightened to ask tough questions.

Are replacement parts widely available? This is a no brainer, but check anyway. Downtime affects bottom line and spare parts from every section of the installation should be readily available.

Are technical and support staff qualified and available to help when needed? Again, this is essential that your supplier offers this. There is nothing more frustrating that buying a system, that doesn’t run at optimal performance.

Can the supplier work with you on a customized solution or configure a system to meet your unique requirements?

Every packhouse is different, so don’t be pressured into accepting a system that is right for someone else but not for you. Selecting the right equipment now will not only save headaches and frustration in the future, but will go along way to ensuring long term profitability.

While this process can seem a little daunting, Goldpack is here to help you make these critical decisions and offer, advice, support, guidance, system design and installation. Once installed, we partner with you all the way to the market.

Feel free to ask as many questions as you like. We are sure that we can set your mind at ease.

Convenience Packaging Sells!

Kwik Lok is an all-plastic closure that allows consumers to easily open and reclose packaging.
The all-plastic Kwik Lok bag closure retains its original shape, ensuring convenient reuse. In addition it is resistant to contamination and ideally suited for use in food security systems that use metal detectors.
Reclosability ranks high on the list of consumer food packaging requirements. Smaller family units and high food costs work to slow food consumption, creating a greater probability of spoilage if the package cannot be effectively reclosed.
Kwik Lok is more than just a bag closure, it’s a complete closing system. We supply automatic and semiautomatic bag closing machinery, and provide the means for packagers to print price-date and other package information on the closure. We sell labels for your bagged package that can help promote your product on the competitive retail shelf.
